Transit-Supported Economic Development in Suffolk County

This initiative engages communities that support the objectives of the larger Suffolk County Connect plan which focuses economic development on places that are already supported by transit or are likely to be impacted by future transit investments. Success of the program is due in part to the fact that the communities volunteer to participate. While each of the six plans completed to date is unique, they all share a focus on compact, mixed-use development. In many cases, specific zoning changes and design guidelines were adopted.

Plan & Process, in Partnership with RPA, was responsible for the urban design work and the use of design in the community-based planning process.

In Amityville, downtown zoning was revised to enable compact mixed-use development.
In Amityville, the underside of the viaduct was transformed into a pedestrian connection to the main street.
